YSI Regional Speak Out
Scoil Mhuire was well represented yesterday at the YSI regional Speak Out event in Sligo. Ms. Boyce's group, The Silent Battle Project, presented their project on young people's mental health and wellbeing with their innovative idea of having a worry box in wellbeing classes among other wellbeing week activities. Ms Gorney's group's presentation highlighted the lack of youth services in Inishowen. Through surveys they found out that young people need a safe space to connect, and this group's innovative action lobbied national and local development groups to help establish a youth drop-in centre called Next Wave Youth Club. Ms Mc Dermott's group, Nourish and Flourish, focused their innovative action on how schools can play a key role in helping to reduce food poverty.

Special commendation was given to Ms. Boyce's and Ms. McDermott's groups in recognition of their 10 and 5 year commitments to the YSI programme. We are very proud of the effort and teamwork of our groups and we wish them every success with their projects. We also wish to thank Ms. Boyce, Ms. Gorney and Ms. McDermott for all of their hard work with our TY students.

The 2nd Year basketball team continued their impressive start to the year with a commanding away win at Loreto Millford. MVP Jamie O'Donnell 2C (16 pts) impressed and Oisín O'Brien 2C (14pts) proved too strong inside. A new five in the 2nd quarter gave the less experienced players some court time and they did very well including newcomer Damhán Dowds 2D. 3rd quarter saw the 'starting five' return showing their skill, speed and strength. Special mention to 1st Year James McConnell 1A. Scoil Mhuire ultimately ran away 14-32 winners extending their season record to 4-0. Lent 2025

The season of Lent is a time of preparation for Easter. It is an opportunity for us to grow in our awareness of God’s presence in our lives. On Ash Wednesday we were invited to receive blessed ashes. Fr. Bradley welcomed people of all faiths and none and stated that Ash Wednesday is a day to acknowledge our humanity and reflect on how we all can make changes to become a better person. Fr. Bradley reminded us that as we journey through Lent in this Jubilee Year of Hope may we remember to let God into our lives.

Ramadan

This year Ramadan and Lent coincide and it offers us an opportunity to engage in interfaith dialogue and learning. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. Like Lent, Ramadan is a moment to time of self-reflection and reassessment of my relationship with God and my fellow human beings. We wish our Muslim students observing the month of Ramadan, a Ramadan Mubarak, meaning we hope you have a blessed month.

Prayer of Healing for Pope Francis

God of hope: Send Your Spirit of healing, to Pope Francis in his illness. As he endures pain and discomfort, give him strength and peace. May he experience the continued grace of your mercy. May your unconditional love comfort him and help him heal. May his faithful and humble service continue to be a beacon of hope for each of us who continue to serve your Kingdom. Through Your Son, Jesus, the great healer of all, we pray: Amen.

Marie Keating Cancer Awareness Talk

Scoil Mhuire recently hosted a cancer awareness talk from the Marie Keating Foundation to all of our LCVP students. The Marie Keating Foundation provides free cancer awareness workshops to both junior and senior cycle students in the Republic of Ireland. The workshops cover information in relation to healthy lifestyle and the steps we can all take to help reduce our risk of getting cancer. The aim of the Marie Keating Foundation CAPs programme is to make the information ‘less frightening and more enlightening’ and to encourage engagement and interaction of the student. Mock Exams 2025

Congratulations.jpg

Congratulations to our wonderful 6th year students who have (almost) completed their Leaving Certificate mock examinations. This week and next week mock orals are running in Irish, French and Spanish. The mock exams are a hugely important milestone as part of their preparation for the Leaving Certificate in June. Reports will be sent to all parents and guardians in the coming weeks. We ask that you and your son/daughter read carefully through the feedback and advice of our teachers as it will provide essential guidance on how to prepare in the remaining months. Remember, we are always ready as a school community to offer whatever help and support that we can to our students. Please feel free to contact us if you wish to discuss the mock examinations.

Key Reminders for all Parents/Guardians

School Attendance

We encourage all of our students to attend school on time every day. When a student is going to be absent or late, parents/guardians must follow our school attendance and appointment procedures (available in Newsletter #1 on our website here).

A huge congratulations to 2D & 1A for winning the Attendance League in the first term. Well done also to 1B (12% improvement) & 2B (10% improvement), who showed the most improved attendance last term. To celebrate their fantastic efforts, students in these classes enjoyed a well-deserved pizza party.

Regular school attendance plays a vital role in academic progress, boosting self-esteem, and supporting overall wellbeing. Let’s all continue striving for excellent attendance for the remainder of the year. The next winning classes will be announced after Easter.

Attendance.jpg

Late in the Morning

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve school attendance, students who arrive late persistently will be required to complete a 1 hour late-comers detention on a Friday. Parents/guardians of the student will be notified of this. The academic school year is short and as the graphic above shows us, every minute counts! If however the student's lateness to school can be explained, please notify the Main Office of this.

.

Personal Belongings

Scoil Mhuire is a big and busy school and it is not unusual for personal belongings to get mislaid. We ask that all items of uniform and school bags are clearly labelled and identifiable. We do not encourage students to bring non-school coats to school and they do so at their own risk. Scoil Mhuire does not take responsibility for missing bags as all students have been given the opportunity to avail of a locker in which they can keep their personal belongings safe and secure.

.

Parking and Road Safety

We ask everyone in our school community to be mindful of where they park, particularly around private dwellings, and to reduce their speed when in the vicinity of local schools. Only 20% of pedestrians will survive a collision with a vehicle travelling at 50kph, while 90% will survive one at 30kph.

Also, there is a parking space outside our main building which can only be used by people who have a blue badge parking card. We will not hesitate to ask drivers to move their car if they do not have one. Please think before you park. We are grateful for your ongoing cooperation in ensuring the safety of all students.
