TY News Bulletin 12

TY Admin - 18th January 2021

2021!! - Hope you are all keeping well. Don’t know about you but I would much prefer to be seeing your faces in front of me today. However we are keeping safe and that is all that matters.

Google classroom

A few teachers have been in touch to say that some of you haven’t joined their google classroom. Can you check in your drive if there is a class you don’t have please and email the teacher for an invite. They probably have sent you one already but it may have got lost among the many emails.

Virtual work

Please join all live lessons. You are never going to have too much work so please do what is requested. If you cannot join due to illness, device availability or internet issues can you please email that teacher and let them know so they can allow for this when recording attendance. In most cases you will still be expected to do the work assigned but later that day instead. Some lessons will be pre recorded and have a deadline for completion, you must meet these deadlines as the teacher will not have time to keep going back to check after. They will have moved all to a whole new set of work from students.

Work Experience

TY are requested not to attend work experience at the minute unless it is something you can do from home. You were sent tasks to complete for the next three weeks. Fun activities that shouldnt take you more than an hour. Unfortunately only half of you completed these last Wednesday. There are 5 credits going for this each week.

Fetac IT

As it is not possible to teach you the IT course at home we have sourced an online version of Microsoft office for you instead. The 20 euro collected for Fetac will now pay for this course instead. The added advantage is that there are certs in career development and driver safety in the course bundle also. Your IT teacher will direct you on the IT certs and can check your individual progress and create a report on how you are doing remotely. I will use the other certs to fill your time on Wednesdays when you are not on work experience. We will continue to deliver this course when we return to school.

We are all completing the Gaisce award. You must continue to do your one hour of Physical activity and get a parent or guardian to sign off on it, your new skill will be the IT course and your community involvement might be some of the tasks I have set for you on Wednesdays or maybe doing something helpful for a neighbour or elderly relative. If it is not possible to complete this part at the minute you will hopefully have time when you return to school to get that done.

John Paul Award

This award continues on Instagram live with the Derry Diocese on a Monday night with a task being set each week for everyone. Please make sure you engage and keep up with this and they will be signing off on you completing your hours.

Youthscape continues for cohort 8 and I think you will enjoy the online version. They are very well set up for the virtual delivery with lots of great activities and even a radio station. YOur meet time will continue to be on a Tuesday 11.30 - 12.30.

Cohort 9 ( new group). You should have all signed up by now and sent in all relevant information. There have been a number of requests from them during the week to suggest a few of you that wanted to do it haven't responded. To be honest this is so time consuming. Please let us know if you now longer want to be involved or get the information into them.

Your online meeting time will be Thursday 11.30-12.30.

Digital Media Workshop

I have sent you an email about this and set up a question in the google classroom regarding who wants to do this course. I need the names by tomorrow Tuesday as I have to forward them to the facilitators. You do not need a music background just a willingness to learn and be creative. There are 25 places available to us. Please put your name in the classroom post for this asap.

Healthfest Workshop

We are registered to take part in the virtual afternoon. This would have been a trip to Dublin RDS in different times. I have sent you an email with a registration link for you as an individual participant. I want us all to log into this next Wednesday 27th from 2-4pm. There will be some great speakers that you will recognise from Irish TV and radio. Please click the link and register by tomorrow Tuesday also. Registration will close before the actual event and I can’t register for you.

I have sent you numerous emails regarding upcoming competitions. With time on your hands now you should consider entering. Please put the names in your search box in gmail and have a read. The competitions include

RTE photography competition

Rathmullan Film Festival competition

National write a poem competition

Design a home competition.

The last competition mentioned is one Ms Grant has asked you to get involved in. I think there may be a couple of teams good to go on this one. She is looking for more people to get involved. I don’t have the details on this one so can you pass your names on to Ms Grant via email. I believe there is some funding to build your models for this competition.
