This year Scoil Mhuire can mark another achievement off their long list in the GAA department. For the first time in their long and successful history they have three representatives on the Donegal Senior Football panel in the form of a pupil, teacher and past pupil.
Darrach O’ Connor is currently facing the immense challenge of balancing Senior and U-21 inter-county football along with preparing for his Leaving Certificate exams. This year has been an incredibly fulfilling year for the final year student of Scoil Mhuire having competed for his county at Minor and U-21 level, as well as captaining his local Buncrana minor team to victory in the County Championship. Darrach is also preparing for a county semi- final with Scoil Mhuire’s senior football team. As the winter closes in, he must embrace himself for a long few months of hard training and study in order to prepare for the vigorous demands of Senior County football and also his mock examinations.
Helping Darrach with his preparation for exams is his Mathematics teacher and Donegal team-mate Éamonn Doherty. The Eunan’s man was successful during the summer months in securing a teaching post in Buncrana. This is Éamonn’s first year teaching after graduating as a Mathematics and Physics teacher from DCU earlier this month.
Along with having a teacher and pupil on the panel; Scoil Mhuire also proudly acknowledges past pupil Paul McGonigle’s involvement in the Donegal team. Paul not only has played for the County senior team but he is at present coaching the Donegal side.
Scoil Mhuire staff and students wish them all the very best of luck in the season ahead.
